John Muir House Opens for Muir’s Ranch Days Event

Free event will allow visitors to take a glimpse into life in the 1880’s at naturalist John Muir’s fruit ranch in Martinez

MARTINEZ – There will be something for everyone, old and young, children and adults, on Saturday, September 25th, 11a.m. – 4 p.m. at the John Muir National Historic Site, 4202 Alhambra Avenue, Martinez.

That day the house and grounds will be open to celebrate Muir’s Ranch Days, a look back at life on a ranch during the 1880’s. The free open house is being sponsored by the John Muir Association. Many volunteers from all over the region are participating to provide a glimpse of life on a fruit ranch in the 1880’s. No matter what your interest, you will find something that appeal to you.

As visitors stroll around the grounds, those interested in music will be entertained by the New World Scottish Dances and the Spinning Wheel Bluegrass Band. Interested in gardening the outdoors? Local Master Gardeners and beekeeper Carlton Webb of Pleasant Hill will be available for advice.

How about the domestic arts? Park Ranger Tad Shay will be baking cornbread in an adobe horno oven, topped with delicious jams and jellies made from fruits grown in John Muir’s orchard.  John Keible of Concord will show methods of drying fruit. Plus native animals from Lindsay Wildlife Museum and Bob Wisecarver of Walnut Creek will be there with his bat houses. Interested in birds? Bluebird Recovery Program, Wild Birds Unlimited and Bird Rescue will also be participating.

Visitors will also have a chance to run into John Muir, which will be impersonated by Frank Helling

Inside the house, visitors will be able to see demonstrations and exhibits of needlework popular in John Muir’s time: quilters, knitters, dressmakers, and hat makers will be demonstrating their crafts which were popular in the late 1800s.

Children are encouraged to join in the scarecrow contest and other activities. Visitors are welcome to dress like in the old times. Dreyer’s ice cream, hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken barbecue, drinks and more will be available for purchase.  Visitors will also have a chance to win great prizes at the silent action and other contests.
